DP3 - We began this project using DP3 and then upgraded to DP4 in 2003. DP allowed us to make these recordings in a very limited physical space and at a reasonable price. If you have a strong Mac, a smattering of common sense / system savvy and are a musician, this is a great way to go.
The Zippo Lighter - This was given to me by my dear friends Sean & Lorraine. Who the original owner was is unknown. It's one of those items that makes its way from owner to owner and from place to place. In fact, it was confiscated from me while at the Boston International Airport in 2002 for security precautions and this photo is all that's left of it. As it moved on to me, it has moved on to another. We wish it well.
Sammy's Cabo Wabo Tequila Label - What can you say about Sammy Hagar having his own brand of tequila? Brilliant! I've never been a fan of the stuff and Dave doesn't drink... but I became a fan after I tasted some of Sammy's finest. The bottle this label came from is nearly a year old and still unopened... but... for... how... long?
Dunes Playing Cards - This ended up in the collage as a reminder that we're still in Vegas, unlike the Dunes which was imploded some time ago. Implosions are a big deal here in the land of sand. Dave and I were live, on site, for the Aladdin implosion and it was something to behold... now you see it, now you don't, what the hell is that huge cloud moving towards us, quick, run for your lives.
The Elvis Pin - We're both fans of Elvis so we thought we'd include the commemorative stamp pin shown here. Dave and I saw Elvis one day while driving to LA. Let's be clear. There are Elvis impersonators and then there are ELVIS IMPERSONATORS. The fellow we saw gave us the look and the lip twitch as we passed his "Elvismobile", sending us into a laughing fit that lasted the better part of an hour and still hurts to this day.
Ottmar Liebert at the Hard Rock - Dave and I have been to a few shows at the Hard Rock and this was a great one. Ottmar writes some pretty amazing acoustic based, desert music. If you're not careful, you could slip into a trance during the show and have a vision or two. I had three during this show and they were all about Charleton Heston and the fact that soylent green is indeed made from people. The trick with the Hard Rock is to get there early, get a seat at the bar and then just hang out while you listen to the band.
Dead Mans Hand - Aces and eights. Never give up, never surrender and never sit with your back to the door.
Mystery $10 Bill - Walking down the street, wind kicks up and blows a $10 bill at me. The thing lands flat on my chest and stays in place, being held there by the breeze against my chest. At that moment, two friends of mine pull into the complex I'm walking out of and stop for a moment to chat... the 10 spot is still flat on my chest. We talk for about two minutes, say "catch you later", and they drive off. The $10 hasn't moved and they didn't mention it. By the way, only in Las Vegas could you get a wind that blows for 5 minutes straight. I grab the bill and it turns out to be an oldie from 1934 with a silver certificate. Why 1934 and the number 10 are linked together in my life and why they mean something specific to me I will not divulge here, but suffice to say that the mystery 10 dollar bill produced some unusual coincidences that day.
King Tut Exhibit - My first stop in Las Vegas after I moved here was the King Tut exhibit at Luxor. Actually my first stop was Club Paradise, a strip club, but one of the gals was done up like Cleopatra so I'm not sure how much of what I remember is Tut and how much was Cindy Sue swinging from a brass pole. So I'm in Luxor, take the Tut tour (which was a blast) and then spend the next three hours trying to get out of the casino. For those of you who don't know, getting into a casino is a breeze, getting out is not always so easy. I finally got out through a hole in the roof I made with a small Egyptian lamp I picked up for $19.95. I stopped screaming about three days later.
30 Day Pass - This is my primary mode of transportation here in Las Vegas. Dave has the Yellow Submarine and I have the CAT Transit System. For a buck and a quarter a lift you can't go wrong. Riding the bus is great because you see so many interesting things. Interesting in the sense of the guy who won't leave his shoes on, landing on the sticky seat or playing a few rounds of "Name that Funk."
Kennedy Half Dollars - How many people own a copy of the Warren Report... call me curious. I carry these at all times (whilst the britches are on) to remind me of the importance of good decisions and taking the time to make them. John Kennedy made a wise decision many years ago, in the face of adversity and under the most dire conditions, and we're all very fortunate that he did. Today I carry 5. Each one represents a friend who I hold dear to me. I like to remind myself as often as possible of how much those people mean to me... I hold them close. Lucky for me I don't have a ton of close friends or I'd be walking with a list.
The Ring - This belonged to my grandfather and was passed on to me. I am the last of a line. There are no more.
Lake Placid Magnet - Dave and I had many, many adventures in Lake Placid, New York. Most of them ended in ugly fashion with one of us on the floor and the other too hammered to help. Some day I'll write a book.
The Alamo Studios - We spent a couple of years at the Alamo Rehearsal Studios in Las Vegas trying to put a band together but the sound is the thing and that just never happened. The highlight, however, was stepping outside to listen to the shrieks and screams of people atop the Stratosphere Casino as they were blasted skyward in the "Big Shot", an amusement ride some 1100 feet above Las Vegas Boulevard. Awesome.
Rolling Stones at the MGM - Another Dave and Eric Classic. The best concert I've ever seen. What can you say about The Stones. Every song they played was a monster and they didn't even scratch the surface.
9 Volts - Between Dave and I we've used approximately 1,129,131 9 volt batteries - give or take a defective - so we thought we'd include the holy grail of reliable power... the Duracel. Behold and stand in awe.
Gold Pick - This was given to me by a woman who I spent many happy years with. It says "Let Nothing Stand in Your Way." A simple gameplan that works well every time.
Switchblade - What do you want here? It's a switchblade and it looks cool. It's also great when you're broke and need a pack of smokes.
